Amplifying Black hair traditions and trials through composition

Witness our collaboration with renowned composer, Jessie Montgomery who composed an original graphic score for visual artist, Allana Clarke’s exhibition “I Feel Everything” at Kavi Gupta.

Allana Clarke’s sculptural works utilize Salon Pro 30 Sec which is a super hair glue used to adhere weave to the scalp.

Using music to tell the Haitian immigration story

D-Composed curated and programmed the works of Black & Haitian stories to accompany Haitian-American visual artist Patrick Eugène for his debut solo exhibition, 50lbs, at Mariane Ibrahim Gallery.

Each song was selected to touch on the emotions that Haitians would experience from the 1960s-70s migration.

Featured composers included Jean “Rudy” Perrault (music featured in the video), Nathalie Joachim, Carlos Simon, Daniel Bernard Roumain, and Gifrants.

Breathing a new life into South Siders Home Movies

We used the music of Black composers to breathe new life into home movie films from residents on the South Side of Chicago in collaboration with the South Side Home Movie Project.

Films featured were captured from the 1940s to the 1990s.

Members of D-Composed created original short films and soundtracked each film with music from Black composers, including arrangements and original compositions.

Working with the documentarians of our time

During the pandemic, we collaborated with 10 photographers from across the country who were on the frontlines documenting the George Flloyd Protests in 2020.

With their photography, we paired it with an arrangement of “A Change is Gonna Come” by Joel Thompson.

The Colbert Show with Jamila Woods

We made our national television debut alongside Jamila Woods for a performance of SULA (Paperback).
