the listening field with jamila woods

During Earth Month, D-Composed teamed up with singer & poet Jamila Woods for “The Listening Field,” a sound-healing experience featuring the music of Black composers, sound bowls, and original poetry to create a soundscape for rest, liberation, and healing.

The event took place at the Kehrein Center for the Arts in the Austin neighborhood. Attendees were encouraged to use the theater in new ways, lying throughout the aisles and transforming the space into a place of rest.

The music & accompanying text explored the rich & complex relationship between Black people and the land, drawing inspiration from poetry & text by Jamila Woods, Danez Smith, Tricia Hersey, & Mariame Kaba.

Compositions by Ahmed Al Abaca, Ayanna Woods, and Joy Guidry further immersed attendees in the serene nature theme.

Floral design installations were done by Planks & Pistils.
